What’s for dinner?

Do you ever wonder what your sponsored child’s day is like or what they eat for dinner? We recently asked our field staff these questions and received some great answers.

In Peru the children’s day looks something like this. They wake up early, wash their teeth, face and hands, have breakfast and attend school in the morning. Then at midday they have lunch, rest a little, attend the kid’s club or the local library to read, do homework and play table games, or the after school classes, or sports classes. Later they will do homework at home; then they have dinner together with their family. If the family is Christian, they attend church meetings, and many families attend CDP activities programmed in the community.

For dinner the families eat a very common meal of rice, a large kernel corn called “choclo”, potatoes, lentils and other vegetables, and a small amount of chicken or maybe fish. On special occasions like Christmas families might eat turkey or pork with rice, potatoes and salads, Paneton (fruit bread) and hot chocolate.

Some very traditional recipes that families prepare in Peru are; Ceviche (fish cut in dices marinated in lime, served with corn, onions and sweet potatoes), green rice with fried chicken at the coast. Pachamanca (meat cooked over a hot stone pit), dry potatoes, corn and cheese in the Highlands; and Juanes (rice cooked in a banana leaf, with a piece of chicken), fish and bananas (boiled, fried or grill), Carapulcra with Sopa Seca (a potato, pork, and chili stew served with seasoned noodles).

Next time you write to your sponsored child, be sure to ask them what their day looks like and what they eat for dinner. Tell them what your day looks like and what you eat for dinner. Just like you enjoy learning about their day, they will enjoy learning about yours.
